Field Trial, Nudgee Landfill (Brisbane) 2001-02

Following the species selection greenhouse/leachate study performed at Central Queensland University 2000-2001,
PhytoLink Australia was contracted by Brisbane City Council to manage a Field Trial at the Nudgee Landfill which began September 2001and is testing the following hypotheses:
·That leachate can be managed by pumping it onto the landfill and processing it via a biological treatment plant in the form of trees and other species established on the landfill.
· That a biological treatment system can also function as a vegetative cap to prevent or reduce the percolation of rainfall into the
landfill.
Dr. N. Ashwath was appointed Principal Investigator for the field trial and was advised by Dr. Ian Phillips, soil scientist, School of Environmental Engineering, Griffith University.
It is anticipated that the field trial will run for two years and will provide Brisbane City Council with valuable data from which City engineers can determine whether phytoremediation will be the preferred rehabilitation method for Nudgee landfill.
